The Ben Stiller Show was fascinating for many reasons, not least because it didn’t have a studio audience nor any form of laugh track, which was unheard of in the early 1990s. Those latter two would go on to create Mr Show With Bob & David, the best sketch comedy since The Kids In The Hall, and yet to be improved upon (although Aunty Donna come close). Airing from 1990 to ‘91 on MTV, then revived by Fox from ‘92 to ‘93, the series not only brought Ben Stiller, Andy Dick and Janeane Garofalo to fame, but more importantly, brought writers David Cross and Bob Odenkirk together.
Woefully forgotten-and yes, I did pitch for this story just so I could wank on about this- The Ben Stiller Show was an absolutely pivotal comedy series. I’ll pick up a copy when it comes out and have my own thoughts here on this blog.While there are a couple of nice lines in there-“LeBreakthrough” (the first time it’s used), and that final, “It is a costume,” work for me-the overall commercial feels like a missed attempt to recapture Stiller’s glorious ‘90s debut, The Ben Stiller Show. Paul Tassi has already written a preview of the game up ( here) and will be penning the official review for Forbes. Play games with your kids! It’s great fun! And really, this is a great game for dads to play. You don’t get to see much of the actual game, but there are plenty of other trailers for that. It’s a funny ad that should generate some buzz-which, of course, is the point. There’s a framed painting of Kratos and Atreus up on the wall behind them. “Leviathan Axe,” Travolta mutters to himself, jotting down a note in his journal. “I’m seventeen,” his son replies, irritated. “When that clicked for me, I picked up my Leviathan Axe and felt truly close to my son for the first time.” “The God Of War dynamic plays out in every parent/child relationship,” Stiller says at one point. John Travolta is adorable, that’s all there is to it. When he mentions that last night, at 2am, he was up thinking about Kratos, Travolta jumps in “Are you kidding? That’s me! Big time!” His daughter leans in and says “Too thirsty” to which he replies that no, he’s hydrated.
Of the three dads, LeBron is the least onboard with this whole Kratos dad therapy, looking almost as confused as the youths, while Stiller-bedecked in leathers and furs face painted red-is much more on Travolta’s level: Eager, excited to be there, happy to share.
